Do your best to recall what started the conversation, what sparked the debate, and what you were doing and thinking when you decided to engage when you could have walked away. Then write the story out with as much detail as possible and edit, edit, and edit some more. New Religions Essay Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, and Christianity are religions that have been around for thousands of years. At some point in time all four of these religions were new, and I am sure viewed with some skepticism of this ideology being taught. Within all of these religions there have been people who have disagreed with the beliefs being practiced and this has caused many to leave to form their own religious groups. The road to finding ones faith is not always easy and that is why religions are constantly being recreated to fit ones perception of God. The new religious movement for this paper will be defined as religions less then two hundred years old. They were formed due to separation from an established church or by an individual having a vision from God. There are two in particular that I will cover Branch Davidians and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I will not be focusing on the religion from where it came but rather on the history of the person, beliefs and the pra ctices of these new religious movements. The Branch Davidians were once known as The Shepherds Rod, a Seventh-Day Adventist Branch. Victor Houteff first heard the teachings of the Seventh- Day Adventist Church in 1918 at a revival meeting. Houteff eventually came to believe that the Seventh-day Adventist doctrines and teachings were inaccurate and he called for reform. The church isolated Houteff and his followers that resulted in a brake from SDA and the foundation of The Shepherds Rod. Houteff saw himself as a divine messenger sent by God to reveal the secret information in the scroll mentioned in the Book of Revelation, Chapter 5. Houteff compiled his beliefs in his book The Shepherds Rod. He began the process of attaining followers by founding the Mount Carmel Center near Waco, Texas with eleven of his followers in 1935. This event prompted Houteff to change the name of his group to the Davidian Seventh-Day Adventist Association. In 1955, Victor Houteff died. With his mission in complete and his prophetic claims unfulfilled, unease swept throughout the group. Houteffs wife, Florence, assumed leadership of the movement despite splintering within the group. One such splintered group, the Branch Davidians, led by Benjamin Roden, would later take control of the Davidian movement. Before this occurred, however, Florence Houteff predicted that the time of Gods judgement would fall on April 22, 1959. She believed this would be when the 1,260 days of Revelation 11 would be completed and on that day God would intervene in Palestine. Followers began to assemble at the New Mount Carmel, located east of Waco, and on April 16, 1959 prepared to move to the Holy Land. (Dallas Morning News)Roden named his faction the Branch Davidian SDA. Roden declared himself the fifth angel (Revelation 9:1), in the same vein as Houteff, who had declared himself the fourth angel (Revelation 8:12). He lead the Branch until his death in 1978, whereupon his wife, Lois Roden, assumed the role of the sixth angel (Revelation 9:16). Vernon Howell joined the group in 1981 and Lois expressed her belief that he would be the groups next prophet. However, George Roden, Loiss son, forced Howell and his followers out of Mount Carmel in 1984. In 1990, Vernon Howell changed his name to David Koresh. He chose his name from Isaiah 45, which states that Cyrus was the only non-Israelite who was given the title anointed or a messiah or in Greek, a Christ. The Branch Davidians embrace the core teachings of the Seventh-Day Adventists. The SDA Church follows most of the conservative Christian beliefs: creation, original sin, the virgin birth, the fall of mankind in the Garden of Eden, the divinity of Christ, the Trinity, belief in Satan as evil, the infallibility of Scripture, salvation by the atonement of Christ, etc. However, three major doctrinal differences exist, and they also deny the concept of innate mortality. They believe that when someone dies they remain unconscious until they are either resurrected into eternal life with God, which is only given to righteous Christians, or annihilated. A second resurrection will occur and the righteous will return to a newly cleansed earth and establish the New Jerusalem. Houteff interpreted current events as signs of the end of time. Under Roden, the Branch Davidians created a logo to represent their beliefs. In his writings, Roden focused on anti-Catholicism, recovery of Israelite festivals, and general conference reform. David Koresh ultimately became the leader of the Branch Davidians and ushered in a new era for this sect with his New Light doctrine and elevated prophetic status. Koresh furthered the work of his forefathers by continuing with the Adventist tradition, adopting a messianic role essential to human salvation, and ordaining the end time. With his focus on the Book of Revelation, Koresh desired to create a new lineage of Gods children from his seed, making him the perfect mate for all female adherents. K oresh established what he called the House of David and in 1984 began taking spiritual wives. Differing from past eras, he progressively linked his groups activities to an imminent future and not too past traditions. A key distinction within Koreshs era was his gradual revelation of the secrets of the seven seals in Bible study sessions, which convinced the group that they were living in the end time. In 1992, he renamed the Mount Carmel community Ranch Apocalypse. Under Koreshs leadership, the group adopted a much more communal form of organization and recruited heavily from the young adult population. The Mighty Men were Koreshs lieutenants who held various responsibilities with in the community. Gradually, tension with the larger society increased as the Davidians moved toward prophetic movement organization. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is one such religion. In 1816, Joseph Smith and his family moved to Palmyra, New York, where, in 1820, a religious revival occurred. Joseph, a young 14-year-old boy, was very intrigued by the numerous preachers and what they had to say. However, he was also confused because each church claimed to be the true one. He decided to turn to the Bible for assistance. There he found the scripture: If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. (James 1:5) In 1823, Smith had another vision, this time of an angel named Moroni. The angel directed Smith to a hill near Palmyra; buried under this hill was a religious history of an ancient American civilization inscribed on golden plates. In 1830, Smith established the Church of Christ in Fayette, New York; however, later revelation commanded th at the name be changed to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The key belief of the LDS church is that it is a restoration to the Earth of the original Christian church, which was abandoned through the apostasy during the early centuries of the Christian era. Several key beliefs are contained in these statements, including a belief in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost. LDS members have confirmed the purpose of life within the framework of three questions: It is the firm belief of the members of the Church that they are the spiritual offspring of God the Eternal Father and that all people lived as spirit beings with God in a premortal life. In this life, people were taught all of Gods plans and purposes; also, it was here where God revealed his Plan of Salvation to them. Life on Earth serves several purposes, the main one being that it is a test to determine if people are worthy to return to live with God. After completion of li fe on Earth, Mormons believe that the spiritual body separates from the physical one and enters the Spirit World. It is here where the person is judged and it is determined if he or she is worthy to live with God the Eternal Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, for all eternity. LDS members do not believe that if one is judged worthy, he or she is automatically placed into the familiar notion of Heaven. This notion comes from Pauls reference to three heavens in II Cor. 12:1-4; however, whereas most Christian denominations believe these three heavens to be the sky, outer space, and Gods kingdom, LDS members believe them to be three degrees of glory. The Terrestial Kingdom is saved for those who lived honorable lives on Earth but were blinded by the craftiness of men and were not valiant in the testimony of Jesus. The highest degree of glory, and the one LDS members strive to reach, is the Celestial Kingdom. Entrance into this Kingdom requires a temple marriage and sealing (see below); p eople are able to dwell in the presence of both God the Father and Jesus Christ for all eternity. Members are typically baptized at the age of eight, although the age obviously differs for those who convert later in their life. At sixteen years of age, young men receive the Melchizedek Priesthood, where duties include blessing the sacrament and baptizing worthy people. Another unique belief held by LDS members is that of baptism for the dead. Along with these beliefs, LDS members adhere to a strict set of moral codes. Young men and women are strongly encouraged to be honest and chaste; all members must abstain from premarital sex, pornography, foul language and gambling. The church has no paid clergy; rather, people are called to various positions and must fulfill their duties in their spare time. Perhaps the most important and central focus of the LDS church is the family. Marriages performed in the Churchs temples do not end at death; rather, both the marriage and family relations hips are sealed for time and all eternity. This idea of an eternal family governs their way of life; every effort is made to live a life worthy of returning to live with God the Father (and thus their family in the Celestial Kingdom). The Branch Davidians, and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints both have separate ideologies but they are the same in the aspect that their religious perspectives are less then two hundred years old. There are websites, movies, and books about Koresh and each hold a slightly different perspective about The Branch Davidians. Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison Throughout the centuries many authors have attempted to capture the individuals quest for self-authenticity. In the novel Song of Solomon, Toni Morrison depicts the many aspects of self-actualization, as well as the tormenting road that leads to the shaping of an individual. Through beautiful language, with immense reality, she is able to describe young black mans journey as he uncovers his personal history, myth, and essence. The story revolves around generations, past and present, of a black family in the south. The character of Milkman (Macon Dead jr.) evolves through the descriptions, events, and experiences of others. His parents, Macon Dead sr., and Ruth Foster Dead, represent the wall-blocking Milkman from his true authentic identity. Many of Milkman's major problems are a direct result of his parents suffocating mistakes. Ruth breast-fed Milkman until he was six years old, hence the name Milkman. She was sexually repressed by her husband for twenty years, and used her young son as a substitute for sexual intimacy. Ruth believed that she possessed no authenticity, and that she was insignificant and isolated. By passing these negative attributes and emotions to Milkman she disturbed his natural process for growth, and ultimately left him feeling lost and insecure. Instead of encouraging Milkman to grow and mature, Ruth hoarded him into the world that she herself despised. Milkman's father, Macon Dead sr., became a ruthless money hound after his father, Jake, was shot and killed for his property. This devastating event from his childhood made him miserly, insensitive, and stingy. Macon Dead sr. becomes a money hungry machine because he does not want to suffer the same fate as his father. Macon Dead sr. fails to tell Milkman the reasons behind his miserly attitude. Thus creating an insurmountable gap between their relationship. Milkman's mother and father both thrust their personal fears on him adding to the destruction of his personal identity. Only after Milkman uncovers these tribulations behind his parents' identities, can he begin his quest for self-authenticity. By displacing the profound effect Milkman's parents have on his quest for self-actualization, Morrison is able to convey her theme of generational conflict. Without appropriate parental guidance, honesty, and explanation Milkman has trouble finding the authentic individual within himself. The inner turmoil within both Ruth and Macon Dear sr. reflects negatively upon Milkman, leaving him lost and unfocused. Morrison writes of this hole within Ruth, "?because the fact is that I am a small woman. I don't mean little; I mean small, and I'm small because I was pressed small. (p. 124)" Instead of accepting the problems with their own authenticity, both parents force their unauthentic values on Milkman. The overbearing needs of both parents result in Milkman's need to find his personal Identity in other places, other people. The individual who first inspires Milkman to discover his own identity is Pilate, the forbidden sister of Macon Dead sr. She is a mysterious woman, large, masculine, and frightening. Her brother abandoned her after years of support because she began making wine. Macon Dead sr. this drunken profession, and subsequently forbid Milkman to encounter her. Despite his father's wishes Milkman is intrigued by Pilate and quickly becomes absorbed in her magical, spiritual, fulfilling world. This was the same world that once held his father in awe. Morrison writes, "surrendering to the sound, Macon moved closer. He wanted no conversation, no whiteness, only to listen and perhaps to see the three of them, the source of that music that made him think of fields and of wild turkey and calico. (P.29)" By entering into Pilate's' home Milkman begins to question why his father acts the way he does. Through Pilate, Milkman discovers a past that seems lost within his father. This realization begins! ns Milkman's quest for self-authenticity. Milkman's flight to identity takes him many places. He is fortunate to have a friend, Guitar, who is also lost, and hunting for his authentic identity. The two pursue adventures and their contrasting personalities leave them wit ha wide perspective on events and experiences. While Milkman seems quiet, poetic, almost stumbling on his authentic self. A Guide to the Japanese Perception of the Color Red Red is generally called aka è µ ¤ in Japanese. There are many traditional shades of red. The Japanese gave each shade of red its own elegant name in the old days. Shuiro (vermilion), akaneiro (madder red), enji (dark red), karakurenai (crimson) and hiiro (scarlet) are among of them. Use of Red The Japanese especially love the red that is obtained from safflower (benibana), and it was very popular in the Heian period (794-1185). Some of the beautiful clothing that were dyed with safflower red are well-preserved in the Shousouin at Todaiji Temple, more than 1200 years later. Safflower dyes were also used as lipstick and rouge by court ladies. At Horyuji Temple, the worlds oldest wooden buildings, their walls were all painted with shuiiro (vermilion). Many torii (Shinto shrine archways) are also painted this color. Red Sun In some cultures, the color of the sun is considered yellow (or even other colors). However, most Japanese think that the sun is red. Children usually draw the sun as a big red circle. The Japanese national flag (kokki) has a red circle on a white background. Just like the British flag is called the Union Jack, the Japanese flag is called hinomaru æâ€" ¥Ã£  ®Ã¤ ¸ ¸. Hinomaru literally means the suns circle. Since Nihon (Japan) basically means, Land of the rising sun, the red circle represents the sun. Red in Japanese Culinary Tradition There is a word called hinomaru-bentou æâ€" ¥Ã£  ®Ã¤ ¸ ¸Ã¥ ¼ Ã¥ ½â€œ. Bentou is a Japanese boxed lunch. It consisted of a bed of white rice with a red pickled plum (umeboshi) in the center. It was promoted as a simple, staple meal during the World Wars, a time that was hard to get a variety of foods. The name came from the meals appearance that closely resembled the hinomaru. It is still quite popular today, though usually as a part of other dishes. Red in Festivities The combination of red and white (kouhaku) is a symbol for auspicious or happy occasions. Long curtains with red and white stripes are hung in wedding receptions. Kouhaku manjuu (pairs of red and white steamed rice cakes with sweet beans fillings) are often offered as gifts at weddings, graduations or other auspicious commemorative events. Red and white mizuhiki (ceremonial paper strings) are used as gift wrapping ornaments for weddings and other auspicious occasions. On the other hand, black (kuro) and white (shiro) are used for sad occasions. They are the usual colors of mourning. Sekihan è µ ¤Ã© £ ¯ literally means, red rice. It is also a dish that is served on auspicious occasions. The red color of the rice makes for a festive mood. The color is from red beans cooked with rice. Expressions Including the Word Red There are many expressions and sayings in Japanese that include the word for the color red. Effect of Exercise on Cancer Related Fatigue in Patients with Breast Cancer - Essay Example The mainstay of breast cancer care is local therapy consisting of surgery along with systemic adjuvant therapy, which includes chemotherapy, hormonal or a combination therapy. Besides major advances in managing both early and locally advanced breast cancer, patients still have to deal with severe side effects of fatigue during adjuvant therapy resulting in substantial impact on patients' quality of life (Markes, Brockow and Resch, 2006). Most cancer patients would say that fatigue is a major obstacle to functioning normally (Portenoy & Itri, 1999). Fatigue is a distinctive, dominant symptom in patients with cancer, that impacts life functional ability and occupational status. The fatigue diminishes the patient's ability to do both physical and mental tasks, as it has physical, affective, and cognitive components of the symptom (Dalakas, Mock and Hawkins, 1998). This kind of fatigue is referred as cancer-related fatigue or CRF. Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) as defined by the National Comprehensive Cancer Network "is an unusual persistent, subjective sense of tiredness related to cancer treatment that interferes with usual functioning" (NCCN, 2005). Since fatigue is not directly observable in most of its forms, its importance and treatment are often overlooked (Newell, Sanson-Fisher, Girgis, & Bonaventura, 1998; Tanghe, Evers, & Parodaems, 1998). Patients suffering from cancer-related fatigue may have difficulty adhering to and completing treatment regimens. Fatigue has also been identified as the main reason patients withdraw from clinical trials. The quality of life of individuals experiencing cancer-related fatigue may be less than satisfactory. The purpose of this paper is to review literatures on the effect of exercise on fatigue in women with breast cancer and make recommendations for nursing practice and health care providers to improve care of individuals suffering from cancer-related fatigue (Visovsky and Schneider, 2003). The following electronic databases were searched Cochrane Database Systematic Reviews, Medline, Highbeam and Pubmed. Terms related to breast cancer, exercise, fatigue, cancer-related fatigue and publication type (e.g., random controlled clinical trial) were used in searching. This search strategy was modified as necessary for each database. Fatigue has been reported by 60% to 100% of patients undergoing treatment for cancer and has been identified as a research priority by the Oncology Nursing Society for a decade (Mock, Pickett, Ropka, Poniatowski and Drake, 2001). Cancer-related fatigue differs from normal tiredness by its sudden appearance, its overwhelming nature, and its refractory response to rest. While oncology nurses are well aware that fatigue is a prevalent complaint in cancer patients, the best way to assess and treat this debilitating symptom is less clear (Clark, 2001). Fatigue is one of if not the most common complaints of patients with cancer. The etiology for CRF is unknown, but is theorized to be caused from activation of proinflammatory cytokines in response to the tumor such as interleukin-1 beta, interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor, have been implicated in the development of cancer-related fatigue resulting in diminished skeletal muscle protein stores. Confession Essay example -- Theology, Jesus, God

There are several assumptions with which I will begin prior to discussing my confession. The first assumption is that Jesus, who was crucified, is Lord and that God has raised him from the dead. A second assumption is that apart from the first assumption, any and all other aspects of my confession could be flawed or wrong. My beliefs about the nature of Scripture, God, Creation, Humanity and Sin, Jesus Christ, Salvation, Holy Spirit, and the Church, though related to the centrality of the gospel, the gospel in itself is not contingent upon many these things. Therefore, though my confession in relation to the aforementioned beliefs could change over time and with experience, the central belief of the gospel of Jesus Christ, however, will never change. In relation to the centrality of the gospel, I also believe that the God who raised Jesus from the dead is the creator of all things, and is inherently good, that God is opposed to evil in the world. I believe that God will eventu ally bring a final judgment and healing to all things, which will restore the universe and the evil within it. While I believe all of these things, provided by the evidence of scripture, I do not believe I will ever know all things of God and theology in this life and possibly should not be concerned with the knowledge of all things of God and those things related to God. The writers of the biblical text were not concerned with knowing all things of God, but instead, having relationship with God and trusting in that relationship. It is with these assumptions that I begin my confession. This confession seeks to: (1) Convey a theology of Scripture, God, Creation, Humanity and Sin, Jesus Christ, Salvation, Holy Spirit, the Church and Ministry; and (2)... ...s the fellowship of the body of Jesus Christ. It exists wherever two or three are together in the name of Jesus Christ to worship and serve. The church is holy in that the church is set apart to God by the Holy Spirit. The church serves as the dwelling place of God on earth and has a unique purpose to glorify God among all people. It is also a community of discipleship and repentance. The church is universal because as Roger E. Olson states, â€Å"it exists across barriers of language, ethnicity, culture and nationality.† (Olson, 304) The universal church extends from Pentecost, until the return of Christ and throughout eternity. The church is apostolic in that it is a continuation of the faith of the apostles of Jesus Christ who received the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost. Palmer added that it wasn't clear what would be the return on investment of her proposed program or any of her current ones for that event. Barton's analysis had been extremely short on Quantitative benefits.Barton complained to a friend Carlo Freitas, he ad of the medical devices division about this, but Freitas disagreed: â€Å"If you want dollars, you have to show how you fit in with management's plans.
